The Government and Society Club is a pioneering new group within ASL designed to raise and spread awareness and understanding about some of the most pressing issues facing governments and societies globally.
Our purpose is to attract speakers from a range of backgrounds, positions, professions and specialities, to share with us their perspectives on challenges, and indeed solutions for reform, within their respective sectors.
In this way, we want to create a society organised around the concept of dialogue with experienced professionals so that we can simultaneously understand important socio-economic and political issues, whilst also gaining a glimpse into the ways in which, in the future, we can translate our educations into the professional world.
At the heart of our mission is the idea of broadening our horizons and to hear first-hand from professionals about the ways in which their careers are shaping solutions for societal and governmental reform.
We want to draw from a wide range of professions and experiences: from politicians, lawmakers and diplomats to healthcare professionals, academics, entrepreneurs, economists and businesspeople. But woven through each of these talks will be the goal of opening up a new way of understanding the challenges and solutions that our world is having to weigh up in the rapid shifts, ebbs and flows of the 21st century.
We were very privileged to hear a fascinating talk and have a brilliant discussion with Lord St John, one of the ninety hereditary peers of the House of Lords. We discussed reform to the House of Lords, as well as his areas of socio-political interest and expertise in South Africa, financial services and information technology.
We hosted a fantastic talk and discussion with Dr Samuels who works within the NHS Imperial Hospital Trust. Her insights into the inner workings of the NHS and life on wards during the time of Covid were eye-opening and really broadened our perception of the complexities of work within the healthcare sector, as well as the need for reform within certain aspects of the NHS.
We were honored to host professor John Wass, one of Britain's foremost endocrine surgeons, who shared with us some of his experiences working in medicine, both privately and in the NHS, and we had a fascinating discussion about healthcare reform within society. He was recently tasked with the inspection of NHS England’s endocrine departments and authoring a report on his findings, so his insights were both topical and brilliant.
Taking us from the realm of healthcare to that of geopolitics and diplomacy, it was a truly remarkable experience to hear from Juan Manuel Santos, who was president of Columbia for eight years and who was the sole recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016 for his groundbreaking efforts at concluding a peace deal with the guerrilla group who had problematized Columbian politics for decades. His views on the ways in which politics and diplomacy always function as an intricate set of negotiations - in which there is always a delicate balance of how far one can concede - were eye-opening and it was an inspirational talk from a man who has shown a positive example of governmental reform.
It was a very great privilege to hear, and to speak with, the recipient of the highest military honour that is awarded in the United Kingdom for military valour. Johnson Beharry was the first living recipient of the Victoria Cross in forty years, and it was tremendous to hear from someone of such experience about the ways in which nations handle their relationships with their militaries. This has proved to be a highly complex area, from the nature of military intervention itself to the issues of how much taxpayer funds should be allocated to defence and military, to the care of soldiers and their families, and the multifarious psychological issues which combat can force upon its participants. Mr Beharry spoke about all of these issues with great depth of knowledge and personal experience, and it was equally fascinating to learn how he has translated his experiences into the formation of a charity which aims to combat gang violence in inner cities in the UK - another highly pressing challenge for the formation of cohesive societies.
